Reinvent Your Home with a Master Plan: 6 Reasons to Plan Ahead
If you are ready to reinvent your home, you need a plan. A cohesive master plan provides the framework you need for confident, decisive action and a positive outcome.
People understand this intuitively when it comes to running a business, training for a marathon or accomplishing a big life goal, but the importance is not as obvious when it comes to reinventing your home. Why wouldn’t you just start with the room that needs the most help and proceed from there?
Benefits of a Master Plan
#1: ALIGN EVERY PROJECT TO THE SAME GOAL
It might take weeks, months or even years to complete every item on your master plan to reinvent your home, but you can rest assured that every action you take is one step closer to your goal. No more spinning your wheels. You have a plan!
#2: SAVE TIME BY ELIMINATING REDUNDANT EFFORTS
If you have a cohesive plan in place, every project builds upon the last. Say goodbye to:
- moving items back, and forth, and back again from one space to another between projects.
- sabotaging future projects because of decisions made for your current project.
- redoing completed projects to work better with the next one.
Instead, when projects are completed in the right order, everything works together and finishing one will give you a head start on the next.
#3: SAVE MONEY BY ADDRESSING EACH SPACE ONLY ONCE
And speaking of redundant efforts, if you tackle the projects one-by-one without giving consideration to the rest of the house, you run the risk of having to undo or redo your efforts later when another project requires a different fix for the same space. This happens much more often than you might think. Every time it does a little more of your time, money, and sanity go out the window. A master plan allows you to think through everything so you only have to touch each project once.
#4: REDUCE THE OVERWHELM
It’s so frustrating to come home from a long day and feel like you’re walking into a giant to-do list. When all you see is chaos, it’s hard to know where to even start. So you don’t. And nothing ever gets better. A master plan puts it all into perspective. You don’t have to complete the list in a week, a month, or even a year. Just understanding where you are and where you want to be, will give you clarity and purpose.
#5: PRIORITIZE
Once you have your list of action items, you can prioritize them in a way that makes the most sense to you. Maybe you want to tackle the inexpensive “quick fix” projects first. Maybe the key to everything is cleaning out your basement so there’s room to store items from the rest of your house. Perhaps the best place to start is with your biggest “pain” point, no matter how big or expensive that project is. Once you have a master plan written down, it will be clear how you can and should prioritize your list.
#6: TAKE ACTION!
Productivity experts say, the best way to achieve a goal is to write it down first. As you go through the process of creating your master plan, you will start to daydream about how amazing your house will be once a few of your projects are complete. The more time you spend visualizing the end results, the more motivated you will be to achieve them. With a master plan you know what you want to do, and where you want to start. Nothing can stop you now! Once you complete the first project and see how much it changes your life, you will be motivated to start the next one. Suddenly what didn’t seem doable a month ago is already done and you are on to the next project. Woohoo!
